Dark Mullein Verbascum nigrum Family: Scrophulariaceae Flowering June - September. Biennial / short-lived perennial. Introduced Dense terminal spikes of yellow flowers with a purplish mark at the base of the petals. The 5 anthers are transversely fixed and the stalks of all the stamens are thickly covered with purple hairs. The leaves are dark green and slightly downy and the lower leaves are long-stalked. Often grown in gardens but only occasionally recorded in Ireland as a garden escape or discard. Similar: Twiggy Mullein, Verbascum virgatum |
