Flowering April-May. Deciduous shrub or small tree. Introduced

Large pyramisical panicles of white, lilac or purple flowers with four petals and a very fragrant scent. The leaves are opposite, cordate at the base and untoothed. A deciduous, suckering shrub to 7m tall.

Widespread throughout most of Ireland as a naturalised garden escape or relic of cultivation on waste ground, roadsides, railway banks and in hedgerows
