Flowering: April-May. Perennial. Native / introduced.

Tiny yellow-greenish flowers, male in spikes, female solitary or 2-3. Short-stalked lanceolate leaves, opposite, small-toothed. A more or less hairy plant with unbranched stems and creeping rhizomes. Height 15-40cm.

Infrequent, scattered distribution on damp, usually shaded, neutral or calcareous soils in woods and on limestone grikes.

Similar: Annual Mercury, M. annua. Branched stems. Almost hairless.
