Water Mint Mentha aquatica Mismín mionsach Family: Lamiaceae Flowering time: July-October. Perennial. Native. Rounded terminal pinky-mauve flower heads with additional whorls of flowers lower down stems. Calyx-teeth pointed, slender. Stalked leaves opposite, oval and coarse-toothed. Mint-scented. Stems often reddish. Grows on permanently wet ground in and beside streams, ponds, marshes and other wet areas. Can be terrestrial or more/less submerged. Similar: Whorled Mint, Mentha x verticillata is the hybrid between Water Mint and Corn Mint but grows on drier ground. |
