Elongated flower spike with a single terminal dark purplish-brown male spikelet, 20-45mm long. 2-4 female spikelets, 15-45mm, the lowest +/- drooping. Long-beaked, pear-shaped fruit with two marginal ribs. Densely tufted with short rhizomes. Height 15-60cm.

Can be locally common on acidic heaths, moors and upland grasslands.
