Flowering May-July, fruiting June-August. Perennial. Native.

Forms dense tussocks of tall, triangular, dark-green stems, to 150cm. Keeled, over-wintering leaves with toothed margins. Tapering to 3-angled tip. Dense panicle of numerous spikelets, usually male florets above, female below. Male sometimes absent. Bracts short/absent.

Fens and swamps, wet woodland, lake, pond and river edges, often base-rich. Becomes smaller and fruits less freely in shaded habitats.
