The flowerheads are often curved, pale green to straw-coloured when mature but longer and more compact than those of Squirrel-tail Fescue, V. bromoides. Spikelets with 3-veined upper glume, 3-4 times longer than lower. Leaf-sheaths not inflated, upper sheaths reaching the base of the flowerheads. Height 10-70cm.

Found on walls, waste ground and in dry, sandy areas, most frequently recorded from SE Ireland.
