Cones ripen April. Deciduous perennial. Native.

Thick fertile stems with brown sheaths appear in spring. Greenish-white sterile stems with 20-40 faint stem ridges. Dense whorls of numerous branches, tight green sheaths with narrow brown teeth. Robust, to 150cm. Can form large colonies.

Widespread throughout Ireland, and can be locally frequent in damp, more or less open habitats. Identified by Paul Green
