Single-flowered spikelets in crowded clusters forming oblong, spike-like flowerheads. White styles, purple stamens. Spikelets with hairs on one side. Aromatic when crushed or drying, contains coumarin. Short flat, pointed leaves, loosely tufted slender stems. 30-50cm.

Abundant, fields, heaths, woods, dunes. Prefers acidic soils.
