Flowering early-late spring, fruit ripe autumn-winter depending on variety. Deciduous. Introduced.

Similar to Crab-apple, M. sylvestris but the calyx and flower stalks are downy and twigs and undersides of leaves remain downy-hairy when mature. Fruit larger and less sour than those of Crab-apple. Branches are not spiny. Many species are cultivated and hybrids frequently occur with Crab-apple.

Widespread relic of cultivation, can also originate from discarded apple-cores. Hedgerows, scrubland, waste ground, rubbish tips.
