Flowering May - June. Deciduous. Native, also widely planted.

Clusters of numerous white flowers followed by green berries that ripen to orange-red in September. Slender purplish leaf-buds, pinnate leaves with 9-15 toothed leaflets. Smooth greyish-brown bark with dark dots. Small to medium tree, height to 15m. Often bird-sown.

Prefers acidic ground, avoids dense shade and heavy calcareous soils. Hedgerows, cliffs, rocky outcrops, mountain stream-edges. Widely planted in gardens, amenity areas.
