Flowering June-August. Perennial. Native.

Large clumps of wiry, strongly ridged bluish-green stems, to 90cm. Interupted pith. Loosely branched flowerheads, appearing lateral, over-topped by bract. Pointed dark-chestnut seed capsule, more/less as long as perianth.

Damp or wet base-rich habitats, often found on heavy clay soils. Wet fields, ditches, roadsides.

Hybrids occur with Soft Rush, J. effusus: Juncus x diffusus.
