Panicle with whorled branches, purplish-brown, remaining open and spreading in fruit. Narrow, flat leaves, rough with smooth sheaths. Short ligules. Tufted grass with creeping rhizomes. 20-50cm.

Very common on drier neutral to slightly acidic grassland, heaths, dunes. Often used as lawn grass.
