Branched, spreading flowerheads, 2-5 spikelets with unequal glumes and 5-veined lemmas. Green or greyish-green, +/- hairless leaves with smooth, keeled sheaths and short, blunt ligules. Tufted growth with creeping rhizomes. Height 15-80cm.

Very common on dry grasslands, roadsides and waste ground.
