Cape-gooseberry Physalis peruviana Family: Solanaceae Perennial. Introduced garden escape Broadly bell-shaped, solitary flowers are creamy-yellow with dark blotches in throat. Calyx is 5-lobed, purplish-green and hairy. Calyx tube enlarges and becomes a straw-coloured husk much larger than fruit. Green berries, ripening yellow-orange. Many small yellow seeds. Leaves cordate, randomly toothed and pointed. Spreading ribbed branches. Hairy plant, usually to 100cm but can grow to 1.8m Very infrequently recorded in Ireland.
