Flowering: March-May. Evergreen tree / large shrub. Introduced.

The white flowers in erect racemes are followed by shiny non-edible black berries. Evergreen shiny-green leathery leaves are small-toothed at the margins. Spreads by bird-sown seeds and root suckering. Height to 7m.

A widespread garden escape that can be invasive in woods and on waste ground and roadsides.

Similar: P. laurocerasus 'Otto Luyken'. A compact cultivar with narrow, pointed leaves, often flowering again in autumn. (Bottom photographs)
