Tiny red styles on female catkins, pendulous yellow male catkins. Leaves oval-rounded, turn yellow in autumn. Smooth red-brown bark. Multi-stemmed. Edible nuts in clusters of 1-4. Deciduous small tree or shrub. Height: To 8m.

Very common in woods, hedgerows and scrub.
