Slender whitish male catkins, female flowers in groups of three at base. Followed by shiny brown edible fruit in very spiny husk which splits open when fruit ripe. Seedlings rarely reach maturity. Oblong leaves, pointed, toothed. Brownish-grey fissured bark. Large spreading tree when mature, height to 30m.

Frequently planted, naturalised in some estate woodlands. Prefers moist, sandy soils.
