English Elm Small green flowers, appearing before leaves. Fruit surrounded by broad, flat wing, notched at apex. The rough, slightly hairy leaves are 4-9cm long with 10-12 pairs of lateral veins. Rough, furrowed bark, twigs also corky. Suckers frequently. Many mature trees have been killed by Dutch Elm disease. Planted on roadsides, in hedges, parks, roadsides. Prefers deep, moist soils.
