Fruiting July-August. Perennial. Native.

Single, erect, long-stalked, terminal male spikelet with 1-3 short-stalked or stalkless female spikelets. The leaf-like bracts are only slightly longer than the flowerhead. Ovoid yellow-green fruit (3.5-5mm), narrowing abruptly into a curved, split beak. Narrow, keeled leaves, half the length of stems. Height 20-50cm.

Found in calcareous and base-rich fens and on flushed mountain ledges.
